PlaySide Studios has created a unique and intense shooter called Kill Knight. The game is designed for console and PC. It is challenging and rewards players who chase high scores and master its mechanics.

Ryan McMahon, General Manager of the PC and Console Games Division, described Kill Knight as “an ultra-responsive, arcade-inspired isometric action shooter.” This one-line pitch guided the game’s art style, music, and overall feel. Sean Gabriel, Lead Game Designer, emphasized the game’s dual nature. “We want you to feel awesome – you’re a badass guy, you’re fighting demons,” Gabriel explained.

This approach sets Kill Knight apart from other top-down action RPGs. Kill Knight focuses on player skill as the primary form of advancement. “The experience that you gain is you as a player getting more mastery of the game, and it’s very much a game that rewards mastery,” McMahon noted.

This encourages players to become genuinely better at the game. The game features four distinct difficulty settings, each offering progressively higher score multipliers. Players start on the lowest difficulty and are incentivized to work their way up.

Unlocking new weapons and equipment changes gameplay mechanics slightly, keeping the experience fresh. Upon defeating the final boss, the Last Angel, players unlock “Sever mode” and “Sufferance,” the game’s hardest difficulty mode. Higher difficulty levels focus on creative challenges rather than just increasing enemy health.

Atmosphere is a key aspect of Kill Knight. The team crafted a surreal and oppressive environment. McMahon emphasized the importance of the game’s audiovisual elements in creating the intense, surreal, suppressive, and demanding tone.

Kill Knight’s development saw a shift in its aesthetic midway through the project. The team moved toward a more vibrant and alien atmosphere while maintaining the game’s dark and brutalist roots. The final art style combines serious architecture with jester-like character designs.

Kill Knight is a game that combines intense action with a rewarding mastery system, set within a meticulously crafted atmosphere. The collaborative vision of PlaySide Studios’ team has resulted in an immensely satisfying and challenging shooter that stands out in the gaming landscape.

kill Knight’s rewarding progression system

If you took a modern game and boiled it down to a pure, score-attack, twin-stick action game, Kill Knight feels like the result. Playing as a bloodthirsty, undead warrior, the game is about killing hordes of demonic creatures as they swarm you in alarming numbers, while each stage shifts and changes around you. The game keeps you on a knife edge at all times, with your tools enough to fight back the legions of baddies.

You’re armed with dual pistols, a powerful secondary weapon with limited ammo, a sword for melee strikes, and a dash to dodge attacks. There’s plenty to think about while you’re slaughtering demons. Initially, it feels complex and difficult, but once you get comfortable with how it all works, you’ll gradually get better, improving your times and scores, which is always satisfying.

Each go at one of the five levels will reward you with Kill Coins, meaning there’s no wasted time. You can use the currency to purchase new pistols, swords, and other equipment. With four difficulty levels to overcome, lots of equipment to change up your play style, and five levels to master, Kill Knight is pretty fleshed out for what it is.

The controls feel very responsive, and it’s all presented with a harsh, grainy aesthetic and appropriately punchy music. However, it can become quite repetitive; level design remains fairly similar, and you’re fighting mostly the same enemies throughout. Still, everything that’s here is made to a high quality, and if you’re in the market for a fast-paced test of skill, this hits the mark.

Kill Knight, currently available for $14.99, is Metacritic’s highest-rated new video game with a score of 91. It also boasts a 4.8 out of five stars user rating on the PlayStation store. The gameplay of Kill Knight draws comparisons to several classic titles, including the beloved Commando, though it is much faster and more intense, incorporating elements reminiscent of Dynasty Warriors.

Released on October 2, the game features top-down action with retro graphics that capture the charm of 1990s shooting games. While Kill Knight doesn’t attempt to wow users with its visuals, it features an intelligent combat and rewards system that players find addictive. One reviewer noted: “Kill Knight is a devilishly impressive isometric shooter.

There’s a pure glee generated by the title’s fast and ferocious combat working in perfect harmony with its hellish visuals and sound design. What may at first seem like an overly complicated system of mechanics quickly falls neatly into place, highlighting just how superbly everything is designed to be cohesive and put the power into the player’s hands.”

In Kill Knight, players take on the role of a knight who has been betrayed and sent to the void, resembling an iteration of hell. The player’s mission is to kill the last angel while fighting through five levels of challenging environments.

There are multiple skill levels available, allowing players of varying expertise in shooters to enjoy the game. October is a heavily competitive month in the gaming calendar, featuring massive releases like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero, Silent Hill 2 Remake, NHL 25, Undisputed Boxing, Sonic and Shadow Generations, Metaphor, and other major titles. Despite the competition, Kill Knight stands out, making it a title worth checking amidst the crowded release schedule.
