The mild temperatures that have been enjoyed in Western North Carolina will soon come to an end as 2024 draws to a close. An arctic blast is set to usher in the new year, bringing significantly colder weather to the region. Today, high temperatures are expected to reach the upper 50s.

However, around midnight, temperatures will drop to around 40 degrees. When combined with high winds, the wind chill will make it feel like the upper 20s as 2025 begins. A cold front will move through the area later on New Year’s Eve.

This front will bring a small chance of a few showers and will also cause wind speeds to increase significantly. The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for several counties. These counties include Avery, Yancey, Mitchell, Buncombe, southern Jackson, Transylvania, and Henderson.

The advisory also covers higher elevations in Caldwell, Burke, McDowell, Rutherford, and Polk counties. The Wind Advisory will start at 10 p.m. and last through noon on Jan. 1.

Arctic chill arrives with gusty winds

During this time, sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected, with gusts as high as 50 mph. The gusty northwest winds will also bring some light snow to high elevations near Tennessee.

This snow is expected to start on the evening of New Year’s Eve and continue through the morning of New Year’s Day. Light accumulation is expected above 3,000 feet. New Year’s Day will be blustery and colder.

Morning wind chill readings will be in the 20s. The high temperature will be near 45 degrees in the afternoon, but the wind will make it feel about 10 degrees colder. A second blast of arctic air is anticipated on Jan.

2 and Jan. 3. This will drop high temperatures back into the 30s.

As we transition into a colder start to the new year, it is important to stay safe and prepared.
