The game director of MultiVersus, Tony Huynh, has addressed the recent announcement of the game’s shutdown and the controversies surrounding it. In a heartfelt statement, Huynh expressed his gratitude to Warner Bros. Games, the development team at Player First Games, and the IP holders for their support and trust in the project.

Huynh praised his team for their endless creativity and passion, stating that their work never ceased to inspire him. He also thanked the players who supported MultiVersus, highlighting the joy they brought the team with fan art, character ideas, and personal stories. Addressing the character selection process, Huynh explained that it was influenced by various factors, including development time, community feedback, IP holder approvals, cross-marketing opportunities, and team inspiration.

He cited the creation of characters like Banana Guard as an example of the team’s enthusiasm driving decisions. Huynh also addressed the toxicity and threats received in light of the game’s impending shutdown.

I know this is painful for everyone, and every member of Player First Games feels it too,” he said. “Nobody wanted this outcome, and it wasn’t from lack of caring or effort.”

Despite the setback, Huynh expressed hope that players would enjoy Season 5 in the remaining time. He reflected on the positive impact platform fighting games have had on his life and aimed to share that joy with the community through MultiVersus.

“I hope that we played a small part and that you can look back on MultiVersus and find some joy in the friends you made and the memories you shared,” Huynh said in closing. “Thank you for allowing this dream to become a reality, even if for a briefer time than we would have wanted.”
