Elon Musk has called for the privatization of the United States Postal Service and Amtrak. He made these comments while speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology Media & Telecom conference. Musk believes that any service that can be privatized should be.
He said, “I think we should privatize anything that can be privatized, just so you’ve got a feedback loop for improvement.”
The Tesla CEO was particularly critical of Amtrak, the national passenger rail service. He described it as a “sad situation” and suggested that visitors from other countries might form a negative impression of America based on their experience with Amtrak. Musk compared the state of rail travel in the US to countries like China, which have advanced high-speed rail networks.

He said, “If you go to China, you get epic bullet train rides. And you come back to America, and you’re like, ‘Amtrak is a sad situation.'”
Musk’s opposition to government-funded rail projects is not new.
According to a biography by Ashlee Vance, Musk’s Hyperloop proposal was born out of his criticism of California’s planned high-speed rail system, which he felt was neither fast nor cost-effective. While Musk did not provide extensive details on his views regarding the privatization of the Postal Service, his comments reflect a broader philosophy of favoring privatization and innovation in various sectors. However, implementing such changes would require action from Congress.
It remains to be seen how lawmakers and the public will respond to Musk’s proposals for privatizing these long-standing government services.
