Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has been appointed as the head of the new Department of Government Efficiency under President-elect Donald Trump’s administration. This move has sparked a range of reactions from his Chinese fanbase, as Musk has a significant presence in China, where his business ventures, particularly Tesla, have found immense success. China is Tesla’s second-largest market, accounting for more than a third of its electric vehicle sales globally.

In the last year, Tesla sold a record of more than 657,000 cars in China, an 8.8 percent increase from the previous year. Musk’s popularity in China extends beyond his business ventures, with fans fascinated by his visits to the country and his perceived contributions to China’s development. However, Musk’s new political role under Trump has stirred mixed feelings among Chinese netizens.

Musk’s new diplomatic challenge

While some see potential benefits, others worry about the division of Musk’s focus. Liu Jian Ping, an ardent Musk admirer who has built a profitable business creating Musk-related content and merchandise, expressed concerns about Musk’s involvement in politics potentially diverting his energy from his business ventures.

Musk’s unique position might also influence US-China relations. There are concerns about partisan criticisms over protecting his investments in China, adding another layer to the already complex US-China ties. However, Assistant Professor Dylan Loh from Nanyang Technological University believes Musk could act as a “bridge” or “intermediary” in tech and science sectors between the two nations.

Despite the risks associated with Musk’s popularity in China, experts like Loh believe that his current approach and positive relations with Chinese officials bode well for maintaining his and his companies’ standing in China. As long as he continues to navigate the political landscape diplomatically, it’s unlikely his political role would adversely impact his business ventures significantly in the Chinese market.
