Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and owner of X (formerly Twitter), has recently turned his controversial attention towards Europe. He is engaging in political maneuvers that have unsettled many of the continent’s leaders.

Musk, who once expressed a desire to stay out of politics, is now using his platform and wealth to endorse far-right populists and criticize centrist governments across Europe.

This new direction follows his heavy involvement in U.S. politics, where he spent substantial amounts to support Donald Trump’s presidential campaigns. One of his recent online posts declared, “From MAGA to MEGA: Make Europe Great Again!” This slogan encapsulates his current approach: challenging European Union leaders and backing nationalist movements. He has been particularly vocal in his criticism of the British government and has demanded the release of far-right activists in the UK.

In Germany, Musk has shown support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD), a nationalist party. Eric Nelson, a former U.S. diplomat, highlighted Musk’s audacity.

“I’m awed at his lack of inhibition to think that he can intervene in multiple countries where issues are complex,” Nelson said.

“To assert that he knows best. It’s quite a hubris.” Nelson also noted the complications arising from Musk’s financial resources and technological influence. The EU’s leaders find themselves at a crossroads, grappling with how to respond to Musk’s interventions.

Bill Echikson, a senior fellow in tech policy at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA), remarked that European governments are troubled by Musk’s actions but lack a coherent strategy to counteract them. Musk’s political evolution has been swift. Since he acquired Twitter, he has espoused the necessity of political neutrality.

However, his recent actions suggest a departure from that stance, as he embraces and amplifies radical viewpoints.

Musk’s unsettling European political moves

This has left many European governments uncertain about his potential influence on Trump’s foreign policy as well.

The concerns in Europe are not unfounded. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, an immigration hardliner, has shown alignment with the newU.S. administration., possibly foreshadowing stronger connections between Musk, Trump, and European populists. Musk’s influence is also manifested in disruptive actions and controversial statements.

At a post-inauguration rally, a gesture he made was compared to fascist salutes by some European observers, which he dismissed as overreactions. The motivations behind Musk’s focus on Europe are varied. Trevor Traina, a former ambassador to Austria, suggested a personal aspect to Musk’s maneuvers, pointing to past efforts to ‘cancel’ him in response to his takeover of Twitter.

Meanwhile, other analysts believe Musk’s actions are driven by business interests, particularly in reducing regulatory challenges for his European companies. Musk’s interference in European politics, especially his support for British and German far-right parties, further complicates matters for the continent’s centrist leaders. These parties have gained traction amid public dissatisfaction with immigration policies and economic challenges.

Musk will need sustainable alliances to maintain his influence despite his significant presence. His public fallout with Nigel Farage of the UK’s Reform Party over the support for jailed far-right figure Tommy Robinson exemplifies the fragile nature of his political relationships. Regulatory authorities in Europe pose another challenge for Musk.

The EU is investigating whether X violated the Digital Services Act, which could result in substantial fines. Additionally, Britain’s parliamentary committees have called on Musk to testify, reflecting the growing scrutiny he faces. In sum, Elon Musk’s foray into European politics has introduced a new, unpredictable element into the continent’s political landscape, leaving leaders uncertain about how to counter his influence but keenly aware of the need to do so.
