NASA has unveiled a new design for its next-generation Mars helicopter, which is expected to significantly enhance aerial exploration capabilities on the Red Planet. The new helicopter, called the Mars Chopper, builds on the success of NASA’s pioneering small helicopter, Ingenuity. In April 2021, Ingenuity became the first aircraft to fly on another world, demonstrating that powered flight was viable in the thin Martian atmosphere.

It conducted a total of 60 flights, assisting in scouting Martian terrain and providing valuable reconnaissance for the Perseverance rover. Operating a drone in the Martian atmosphere poses unique challenges due to its significantly lower density—less than 1% of Earth’s atmosphere. This necessitates that helicopter blades must work harder to generate sufficient lift.

Additionally, the fine Martian dust could potentially damage the drone’s delicate components. The Mars Chopper is designed with a greater payload capacity, allowing it to carry scientific instruments such as imaging and analysis kits. The enhanced payload will enable the helicopter to assist in both scouting and scientific tasks, including terrain mapping and analysis.

Ingenuity’s successor in Mars exploration

It will also play a supportive role in human explorations by reaching areas inaccessible to rovers. The new Mars Chopper is about the size of an SUV and features six rotors, each equipped with six blades.

These blades are smaller but collectively provide more lift. The current design configuration enables the drone to carry a payload of up to 5 kilograms over a distance of up to 3 kilometers. The project is a collaborative effort between NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California and the Ames Research Center.

NASA aims to revolutionize the exploration of Mars and other alien worlds with solid surfaces and atmospheres capable of supporting flight. The Mars Chopper is expected to significantly boost the value of ground-based exploration by providing detailed aerial reconnaissance. Its ability to reach otherwise inaccessible areas will be an invaluable asset in supporting human exploration of Mars.

The new Mars Chopper marks an exciting step forward in NASA’s quest to explore new worlds.
