Netflix is rolling out a major overhaul of its user interface. The update introduces a beta version of its search function powered by generative AI tools. Chief Product Officer Eunice Kim and Chief Technology Officer Elizabeth Stone detailed the updates during a virtual presentation.
Kim described the new Netflix look as “still the one you know and love – just better.”
One highlight of the revamp is an increase in information attached to individual titles. Identifiers like “Emmy Award winner” or “No. 1 in TV Shows” will be added.
The AI search tools, initially available only on iOS in beta, will facilitate more conversational inquiries from viewers. Users can request “a scary movie – but not too scary” or “something funny and upbeat.”
Netflix also plans to test a vertical feed on its mobile app.
AI enhances Netflix interface
This will enable subscribers to watch an entire show or movie immediately, add it to a personalized list, or share it with others. Stone said, “Obviously, everything starts with great shows and movies that people love. But if you think about all of the areas where Netflix has a big advantage — our reach, our recommendations, our fandom — tech enables all those things.
The mobile experience will also include more visible shortcuts.
Search” and “My List” are moving to the top of the page from the left-hand side, where they were previously somewhat hidden. Recommendations on the home page are now more responsive to users’ moods and interests. The background colors of a show tile will match the key art.
Netflix’s overhaul reflects its ongoing commitment to enhancing user experience through innovative technology and design improvements. The changes will be phased in globally over the coming weeks and months.
