New York State is set to build a new nuclear power plant to meet the growing energy demands, particularly from power-hungry AI data centers. Governor Kathy Hochul has instructed the New York Power Authority to identify a site in upstate New York and decide on a design for the reactor project. The project aims to add at least 1 gigawatt of generating capacity, which should be sufficient to power approximately 1 million American homes.
No completion date has been specified for the nuclear plant, nor has the project’s cost been disclosed. The Empire State currently hosts about 219 data centers, and this number is likely to increase as companies expand to meet the rising demands driven by AI advancements. The state’s energy capacity was significantly reduced when the Indian Point Energy Center shut down its last two reactors in 2021, resulting in a loss of approximately 25 percent of the city’s electricity supply.
A report by management consultancy Bain & Company warned that rising demand could cause power consumption to outstrip supply within the next few years.
Meeting New York’s energy demands
Earlier this year, President Trump signed an executive order aimed at quadrupling the nation’s nuclear capacity from 100 GW to 400 GW by 2050.
This executive order followed several technology giants, including Amazon, Meta, and Google, who had called for efforts to triple global nuclear capacity by the same date. Amazon recently announced plans to purchase nuclear energy for its facilities in Pennsylvania as it builds new high-tech cloud computing and AI innovation campuses in the state. Constellation, a carbon-free energy business, welcomed New York’s plan to expand its nuclear energy capacity.
It is yet another recognition of nuclear energy’s critical role in achieving the nation’s leading clean energy goals. We look forward to working with the Governor and state leaders to ensure atomic energy continues to power economic growth and a clean, affordable, and reliable energy future for New York,” said Constellation Chief Legal and Policy Officer David Dardis. Nuclear energy seems poised to play a significant role in meeting growing energy demands, driven by the expansion of AI and other emerging technologies.
As states and companies adopt cleaner energy sources, nuclear power offers a reliable and greenhouse gas-free alternative to meet the rising electricity demand.
