The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded a $200 million contract to OpenAI to develop AI capabilities for the Pentagon. The contract will be managed by the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office, which leads AI adoption efforts across the U.S. military. The project is part of a broader government initiative aimed at harnessing AI responsibly and effectively.
The goal is to streamline operations, reduce administrative burdens, and enhance national defense. A key component of the project involves the development of prototype agentic workflows. These are semi-autonomous AI agents designed to perform repetitive, time-consuming tasks that currently require significant human effort.
The AI tools would free up both military and civilian personnel, enabling them to focus on high-value tasks that enhance mission readiness. The effort builds on the Pentagon’s previous AI work, including a year-long evaluation of the reliability of generative AI for defense use. With safeguards in place, AI is actively being used by the Army to sift through massive volumes of unstructured data, such as regulations, field manuals, and procurement documents.
Generative AI also assists with drafting acquisition paperwork and translating orders into actionable tasks for military aid efforts.
OpenAI secures Pentagon AI contract
This contract signifies a larger trend: federal agencies are moving forward with secure, carefully governed AI integration to enhance cybersecurity, data management, and operational effectiveness across government entities.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman assured that the use of AI within the military will adhere to the company’s established usage guidelines, which prioritize ethical considerations and responsible deployment of the technology. OpenAI builds AI to benefit as many people as possible and supports U.S.-led efforts to ensure the technology upholds democratic values,” said Sam Altman. The collaboration with the U.S. military marks a significant step as big tech companies increasingly offer their tools to the defense sector.
Prominent players, including Meta and Palantir, have also engaged in similar efforts. Previously, OpenAI partnered with defense technology startup Anduril Industries to develop AI solutions for security missions. This collaboration aims to leverage OpenAI’s models in conjunction with Anduril’s military technology to enhance defenses against threats such as aerial drones and other unmanned aircraft systems.
The Defense Department specified that the contract is with OpenAI Public Sector LLC and that the work will primarily occur in the National Capital Region, including Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas in Maryland and Virginia. This contract is a part of a new initiative named OpenAI for Government, aimed at providing U.S. government bodies with custom AI models for various national security needs. “All use cases must be consistent with OpenAI’s usage policies and guidelines,” the company emphasized.
