Scores of people participated in protests against President Donald Trump and Elon Musk across all 50 states and globally on Saturday. The protests were organized by a pro-democracy movement in response to what they describe as a “hostile takeover” and attack on American rights and freedoms. Demonstrations were held at state capitols, federal buildings, congressional offices, parks, and city halls nationwide.

One of the event flyers stated, “Whether you are mobilized by the attacks on our democracy, the slashing of jobs, the invasion of privacy, or the assault on our services – this moment is for you.” The organizers aimed to build a massive, visible, national rejection of what they perceive as a crisis. The protest organizers estimated that thousands of people participated in events across the country and in major cities like London and Paris. The rallies included a coalition of civil rights organizations, veterans, women’s rights groups, labor unions, and LGBTQ+ advocates.

The protesters gathered to demand “an end to the billionaire takeover and rampant corruption of the Trump administration; an end to slashing federal funds for Medicaid, Social Security, and other programs working people rely on; and an end to the attacks on immigrants, trans people, and other communities.”

At the Minnesota State Capitol, demonstrators chanted slogans and carried signs. Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, speaking in Washington, DC, criticized the administration, stating, “Our founders wrote a Constitution that does not begin with ‘We the dictators,’ the preamble says ‘We the people.'”

Addressing the crowd, Rep.

Ilhan Omar of Minnesota highlighted the importance of protecting due process and caring for the nation’s most vulnerable. Florida Rep.

Protests across US against policies

Maxwell Frost urged people to take action by protesting, donating to mutual aid, and participating in direct action and legislative strategies. Thousands of federal workers have faced layoffs as part of efforts by the Trump administration and Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency, to downsize the federal government. Musk has been criticized for policies aimed at reducing spending on vital services while prioritizing corporate interests.

Protests outside a Tesla dealership in London were part of a global demonstration against Musk’s policies. Participants voiced concerns over the undermining of US commitments to democracy and the impact on federal employees. During the demonstrations, there were some tense moments.

In Lafayette, Indiana, a man took a gun out of his truck after an altercation with protesters. Police detained and questioned him but released him after determining he had not aimed the weapon at anyone. Union leaders voiced strong opposition to the administration’s policies.

“The Trump administration is absolutely destroying public services in this country,” said National Federation of Federal Employees President Randy Erwin. “They claim to be making government more efficient, but they’re doing the exact opposite.”

The protests signify a growing dissatisfaction with the administration’s policies and a call to action for Americans to stand up for democratic values and public services.
