The Moss Landing battery storage facility fire on January 16 has left residents in the surrounding areas frustrated and concerned about their health and safety. Many people living near the plant, located a couple of hours south of San Francisco, have reported persistent symptoms since the blaze, including bloody noses, headaches, rash-like burns, and a metallic taste in their mouths. Community organizers say hundreds of residents have been affected, with symptoms subsiding when they leave the area.

Despite this, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and California state regulators have declared the area safe. Residents have taken matters into their own hands, forming Facebook groups to share their experiences and conducting their own investigations. Environmental activist Erin Brockovich has joined a mass action lawsuit against Vistra Corp., the company operating the facility, and other parties, alleging a failure to implement adequate fire safety measures.

Residents want health and safety assurances

New data collected by residents and tested by a private lab has revealed heavy metals in surface dust miles from the scene, at levels that environmental toxicologist Don Smith calls “concerning.” The dust samples show higher levels of nickel, cobalt, and manganese—the main components of lithium-ion batteries—which can cause respiratory inflammation and other health issues. Brian Roeder, co-founder of the activist group Never Again Moss Landing, and his wife have abandoned their home in Prunedale due to respiratory problems following the fire.

Roeder wants the state to conduct more testing beyond the limited efforts of residents and researchers. Vistra maintains that its own testing has not detected any hazardous conditions outside the plant, stating its commitment to the community and working with agencies to ensure public health and safety. However, the incident has taken a toll on local businesses, with the popular Haute Enchilada Café closing indefinitely due to uncertainty surrounding the plant’s safety.

As the community waits for answers, they continue to demand proof that they have nothing to worry about, while authorities work to determine the cause of the fire and ensure the plant’s safety.
