SpaceX is gearing up for its seventh Starship test flight, which is now scheduled to launch on Monday, Jan. 13, at 5 p.m. EST from the company’s Starbase facility in South Texas. This launch will be the first Starship flight of 2025 and will test a new version of the world’s largest rocket.
The Starship and Super Heavy booster combined form the tallest and most powerful launch vehicle on Earth, standing nearly 400 feet tall. This test flight aims to validate multiple enhancements and prepare for future missions, including NASA’s planned lunar landing in 2027 and potential missions to Mars. The upcoming test will focus on several key upgrades to the Starship spacecraft, including enhanced flight computer and avionics systems, a redesigned heat shield, and smaller forward flaps positioned to reduce heat exposure.
SpaceX will also test a set of simulated Starlink internet satellites to validate payload deployment capabilities. Elon Musk has confirmed that the launch will be delayed by “three or four days,” likely taking place sometime next week. SpaceX aims to significantly increase its launches this year and has been holding a backup window through January 16.
Starship test flight 7 upgrades
The mission will seek to catch the Starship rocket’s Super Heavy booster at the launch site, mirroring a previous fall attempt. If everything goes as planned, the Super Heavy booster will attempt a return to Earth for a catch by giant metal “chopstick” arms at the launch pad.
However, SpaceX officials have stated that the catch will only proceed if all safety criteria are met; otherwise, the booster will perform a soft landing as a contingency. You can watch the launch live via a livestream that will likely begin about 30 minutes before the launch. SpaceX’s official launch webcast will also be available on the company’s YouTube channel and social media platforms.
For those in South Texas, you can try to watch the launch in person from public beaches near the Starbase site or other vantage points like the Cameron County Amphitheater. The SpaceX Starship Flight 7 test flight is expected to last just over 66 minutes, following a trajectory similar to previous flights. During the mission, the Starship vehicle will attempt to deploy 10 simulated payloads, mimicking the next-generation Starlink satellites.
Stay tuned for live updates and extensive coverage of SpaceX’s Starship Flight 7 launch as the company continues to push the boundaries of space exploration.
