Stellantis recalls 1.5M Ram trucks over software bug

Stellantis, the parent company of Ram and Jeep, is recalling over 1.2 million vehicles due to software and hardware issues. The recall affects Ram 1500 pickup trucks from model years 2019 and 2021-2024, as well as Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators from 2018-2024. The Ram 1500 recall is due to a software malfunction in the anti-lock brake system (ABS) control module.

This glitch can unexpectedly disable the vehicle’s Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system, potentially compromising vehicle stability and increasing the risk of a crash. Stellantis discovered the issue during a routine review of customer feedback, which prompted an internal investigation. Owners of affected Ram 1500 trucks may notice various warning lights on the dashboard related to the ABS, ESC, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Forward Collision Warning systems.

Stellantis has stated that the foundation brake function would not be affected by this issue.

The Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator recall involves 32,863 vehicles from model years 2018-2024 and 2020-2024, respectively.

The issue stems from an instrument panel cluster that may experience an internal short circuit and fail, preventing the display of crucial information such as the speedometer and warning lights. This failure increases the risk of a crash and does not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. To address these issues, dealers will update the ABS control module software in the affected Ram 1500 trucks and replace the instrument panel cluster in the recalled Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators free of charge.

Recall notification letters are expected to be sent to vehicle owners by October 3, 2024. Stellantis spokesperson Frank Matyok confirmed that the recall also affects Ram 1500 trucks in Canada (158,670 vehicles), Mexico (13,419 vehicles), and other markets outside North America (61,072 vehicles). Vehicle owners can contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403 for more information, referencing recall number 85B for the Ram 1500 and recall number 30B for the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator.
