Stephen Richer, the Maricopa County Recorder, has been a vocal critic of claims of widespread election fraud in Arizona. He has repeatedly corrected misinformation, even from high-profile individuals like Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly Twitter). Musk recently alleged that Arizona refuses to update its voter rolls, a claim stemming from a baseless lawsuit.
Richer emphasized the importance of factual integrity, stating, “The reality is: The facts, the truth, the law, was never on the side of the people who allege mass fraud in our electoral system.” He pointed out that none of the approximately 50 lawsuits claiming election fraud in Arizona have held up in court since 2020. Richer’s office often bears the brunt of public misconceptions resulting from misinformation.
Richer disputes Arizona fraud claims
“When people like Mr. Musk post on Twitter or speak to news outlets and it’s just filled with innuendo, or filled with lies, or filled with inaccurate information, then it’s offices like mine and the 150 full-time employees that are in my office who see the downstream effects of that,” Richer said. Some of these effects, he noted, can turn ugly and violent.
Regarding the impact of these falsehoods on the Arizona Republican Party, Richer remarked, “We’re the party of Abraham Lincoln and we’re the party of Ronald Reagan … and we bastardized all of that just to fixate on this one falsity, which is that the election was stolen.” He indicated that this focus has not only disqualified several Republican candidates in primary elections but also made it challenging to succeed in general elections. Richer also commented on the future for Republicans who oppose Trump, mentioning other prominent figures such as former Vice President Dick Cheney, former Defense Secretary Mark Esper, and retired U.S. Marine Corps General John Kelly, all of whom have expressed discontent with Trump’s direction for the party. Richer asserted, “I will never vote for anyone who gives purchase to these lies about something as fundamental to our system of governance as ‘Was the 2020 election stolen?'”
Richer’s staunch opposition to election fraud misinformation and his critique of the current trajectory of the Arizona Republican Party place him among a growing list of conservatives challenging the influence of Donald Trump on their party.
