Trump’s policies challenge U.S. decarbonization efforts

President Trump’s second term has seen a significant shift in U.S. energy and environmental policies. The administration has signed multiple executive orders aimed at rolling back existing climate change actions and protecting traditional energy sources, such as coal, oil, and natural gas. Experts warn that these policies could slow down global efforts to decarbonize.

Frances Colon, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, stated that while the U.S. rollback may hinder progress, other countries will need to step up to keep the momentum going. The U.S. has historically been a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, responsible for about 20% of carbon dioxide emissions since 1850. This puts a moral imperative on the country to lead in the transition to clean energy.

However, the policy reversals could result in missed economic opportunities for American firms in the growing clean tech industry.

Trump’s impact on climate goals

Despite the setbacks, the shift towards renewable energy is gaining traction worldwide.

Countries like Norway and China are seeing a significant adoption of electric vehicles. Clean energy investments are outpacing fossil fuel investments globally, driven by advancements in battery technology, solar, and wind energy. Michael Lenox, a professor at the University of Virginia, emphasized that technological progress will inevitably drive the shift to clean energy, regardless of federal policies.

As clean energy solutions become more economically viable, markets are expected to adopt them. While the Trump administration’s policies may attempt to revive traditional fossil fuels, experts agree that the commercial viability of clean energy technologies will ensure that the decarbonization movement continues to advance. The global drive toward a net-zero economy is expected to carry forward, propelled by market forces and technological innovations.
