These days it can be difficult to tell the difference between Web, desktop and mobile apps. “The lines and distinctions between Web and desktop are definitely vague,” said David Intersimone of Embarcadero Technologies. “An application is an application. Period. End of story.”
That convergence has changed user expectations and placed new demands on developers, particularly regarding the design of interfaces. “As usability issues take center stage, enterprise teams are bringing in outside design experts,” noted Adobe’s Dave Gruber.
According to Forrester analyst Jeffrey Hammond, “Design sensibility has become a critical skill.” Developers with design skills “can write their own ticket,” he added.
