Mobile analytics firm Flurry has released a new report that surprisingly concludes that freemium apps (those that are free to try but charge for “extras”) make more money than apps that cost money. In fact, freemium apps account for 65 percent of the revenue earned by the top 100 mobile games. That’s a dramatic change since January, when premium games accounted for 61 percent of revenues.
Flurry says that mobile development success now comes from engaging users and providing “compelling spending opportunities,” not from racking up a lot of units sold.
