Adobe has announced that it will purchase Nitobi, the startup behind the PhoneGap open source mobile development project. The two companies say they will donate the PhoneGap code to the Apache Foundation, where it will become part of an incubator project known as “Callback.” This will allow other contributors, such as IBM, to continue working on the PhoneGap project.
The PhoneGap APIs allow developers to write code once that runs on multiple mobile platforms as if it were a native apps. Adobe plans to continue work on PhoneGap as a complement to its own Adobe AIR technology.
