Heroku Launches Database as a Service

Salesforce.com’s Heroku division is adding something new to its lineup of cloud development offerings: a database as a service based on the open source PostgreSQL database. Heroku Postgres uses the standard “off-the-shelf” version of PostgreSQL and “creates multiple, geographically distributed copies of all data changes as they are written” in order to provide protection from failure. Prices start at $200 per month for a 1.7GB cache and go up to $6,400 per month for a 68GB cache.

Salesforce.com also offers a similar service called Database.com, which is based on Oracle technology.
