Oracle’s Richard Bair has announced that the company plans to open source JavaFX ports for iOS and Android. In fact, part of the iOS code will be released next week. The move comes as Oracle is working on open sourcing the complete JavaFX stack. And it’s significant because, as Anahata Technologies notes, “If these efforts are successful, software vendors around the world would be able to use one single code base to deliver applications for mobile devices running iOS, Android or Windows RT, desktop computers and laptops.”
However, the tools still face some legal challenges. Oracle plans to release the code under GPL licensing, which is incompatible with Apple’s terms of service.
