ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley reports that forces within Microsoft are pushing the company’s software development teams towards cloud computing. James Larus, the head of OS research for Microsoft Research, started a project called “Cloud Build” about eighteen months ago. He describes it as “an attempt to get developers to write in the cloud, not on the desktop.”
Another Microsoft researcher named Wolfram Schulte is heading up a project called Tools for Software Engineers (TSE) that is also looking into cloud development. Currently, TSE has a project called CloudDev that aims to bring the benefits of cloud computing to Microsoft’s development process and a related project called CodeMine that focuses on software analytics.
