Rackspace has launched a new cloud computing service that it calls OnMetal. Based on OpenStack technology, it will allow enterprises to deploy a cloud environment on single-tenant physical servers at Rackspace facilities. It gives enterprises more control over the physical hardware, plus the added security and peace of mind that comes from not sharing servers with other Rackspace customers.
OnMetal customers will be able to scale up quickly because “the un-provisioned servers are idle, already racked and cabled when not being used by a customer,” said Paul Querna, director of corporate strategy at Rackspace.
The OnMetal service also offers some performance benefits over other cloud computing services.
