Citing an unnamed source, Bloomberg is reporting that Docker has raised an additional $95 million in funding, bringing its total valuation to about $1 billion. The news highlights the growing popularity of containerization technology. More than 100,000 applications work on Docker, and since last June, the number of Docker-related GitHub projects has grown from 6,500 to more than 35,000.
Docker, which is an open source technology, generated less than $10 million in revenue last year. Docker Chief Executive Officer Ben Golub suggested that enterprises are still learning what Docker is, saying, “It?s like the fable of the five blind men and the elephant. Everyone who touches Docker has a different interpretation depending on where they are.”
