In the nearly 20 years I’ve been writing software professionally, the one stand-out skill that all of the best engineers have is critical thinking.

Being an expert in Javascript or C++ is great, but having the ability to break down problems and solve them regardless of the framework or language will get you a lot further.

Critical thinking doesn’t tie you to an industry, language, framework or company.

The best developers don’t take fully written specs and convert them into code by rote, they question whether the spec delivers what the client requires. They look for edge cases and race conditions. They try to break the system in ways that others don’t think of.

A software engineer is not just someone who knows their chosen language deeply. A Software Engineer is someone who solves problems.
