There is “no silver bullet” for software testing. Testing mitigates risk, so your approach to testing a project should focus on where the risks are.
For example, if the project has a heavy dependency on a third party, testing the integration and API contracts with that third party can help give us confidence that it will work as we expect.
Conversely, if the project is mainly gluing together disparate platforms, writing unit tests to meet 100% code coverage doesn’t really help much beyond giving you warm fuzzies at hitting a number.
Test for what you think will break, or what you don’t understand. When unexpected things break, it teaches us more about what we should be testing for.

My contrarian take is that comprehensive testing is not strictly necessary or even advisable when working on certain types of applications. When the focus is on velocity and time to market — it is much better to structure code in a way to avoid making common production mistakes. The steps to follow would be:
1. Strong typing throughout the code — APIs, third party libraries, UI elements etc. should be strongly typed so that developers can find it easy to refactor codebases when necessary – with the certainty that any breaks will be found during compile time.
2. Maintaining strong separation between presentation elements and business logic — this technique can be a bit verbose; however, having business logic scattered across the codebase intermixed with UI elements, and having UI elements strongly tied to the business logic is a recipe for disaster when it comes to long term maintenance.
3. Reusing patterns and abstractions — take time to create repeatable patterns and reusable components once, and then use them in a predictable fashion across the codebase. Avoid over-customization as well for this strategy to work most effectively. This limits any future changes (which may potentially result in bugs) to a limited set of files, which makes them easier to maintain and debug.
