By the DevX mobile testing team. We tested every clipboard clearing method in this guide on Samsung Galaxy S25, Google Pixel 9, OnePlus 13, and Motorola Edge running Android 15. We verified clearing clipboard through Gboard, Samsung Keyboard, SwiftKey, and third-party clipboard managers. All steps and keyboard interfaces confirmed working March 2026.
Your Android clipboard stores the last thing you copied — text, links, phone numbers, images, or passwords. On phones with Samsung Keyboard or Gboard clipboard history enabled, it can store dozens of recent items. Clearing the clipboard removes this copied data, which is important for privacy (especially after copying passwords or sensitive information) and to keep your clipboard history tidy.
How To Clear Clipboard on Samsung Phones (Samsung Keyboard)
Samsung Keyboard has a built-in clipboard manager that saves your last several copied items. Here’s how to clear it:
- Open any app with a text field (Messages, Notes, Chrome, etc.).
- Tap the text field to bring up the keyboard.
- Tap the clipboard icon on the keyboard toolbar. If you don’t see it, tap the three dots (⋯) on the toolbar and select Clipboard.
- You’ll see your clipboard history. To delete individual items, long-press an item and tap Delete. To delete everything, tap Delete all (or the trash icon).
Samsung also lets you pin clipboard items so they don’t expire. Pinned items stay until you manually remove them.
How To Clear Clipboard on Google Pixel and Stock Android (Gboard)
Gboard (Google’s keyboard) includes clipboard history that stores copied items for one hour by default. To clear it:
- Open any app with a text field and tap it to bring up Gboard.
- Tap the clipboard icon on the toolbar. If it’s not visible, tap the three dots (⋯) and select Clipboard.
- If clipboard history isn’t enabled, you’ll see a toggle to turn it on. If it’s already on, you’ll see your recent clips.
- To delete a single item, long-press it and tap Delete.
- To clear everything, tap the pencil icon (edit), select all items, then tap the trash icon.
Gboard automatically deletes clipboard items after one hour unless you pin them. Pinned items stay indefinitely until you manually delete them.
How To Clear Clipboard on OnePlus and Motorola
OnePlus and Motorola phones typically use Gboard as the default keyboard, so the steps are the same as above. If you’ve switched to a different keyboard:
SwiftKey (Microsoft): Tap the clipboard icon on the toolbar, then tap and hold items to delete them individually or use the clear option to remove all.
Other third-party keyboards: Most modern Android keyboards include a clipboard manager in their toolbar. Look for a clipboard icon or check the keyboard’s settings menu.
Clear the Current Clipboard Item (Quick Method)
If you just want to replace what’s currently on your clipboard without opening the clipboard manager:
- Open any app and type a single space or any random character in a text field.
- Select the text you just typed (long-press and tap Select all).
- Tap Copy.
This overwrites whatever was previously on your clipboard with the harmless text you just copied. It’s a quick way to clear sensitive data like a copied password without opening the clipboard manager.
Turn Off Clipboard History
If you don’t want your keyboard saving clipboard history at all:
Gboard
- Open Gboard’s clipboard (tap the clipboard icon on the toolbar).
- Toggle off Clipboard history.
With clipboard history off, Gboard only stores the single most recent copied item (which is how all Android clipboards work at the system level) and doesn’t keep a visual history.
Samsung Keyboard
Samsung Keyboard doesn’t have a toggle to disable clipboard history entirely, but you can regularly clear it using the Delete all option, and Samsung automatically removes non-pinned items after a set period.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does clearing the clipboard delete copied photos?
Clearing the clipboard removes the copied reference to the photo, but the original photo stays in your gallery. The clipboard only holds a temporary copy — deleting it from the clipboard doesn’t affect the source file.
Can someone see what I’ve copied to my clipboard?
Starting with Android 12, apps are not allowed to silently read your clipboard in the background. Android shows a notification at the bottom of the screen whenever an app accesses your clipboard. However, any app you actively paste into can see the clipboard contents, so clear sensitive data after use.
Does the clipboard clear itself automatically?
On Gboard, clipboard items are automatically deleted after one hour (unless pinned). On Samsung Keyboard, items persist longer but eventually expire. The single system clipboard item (the most recent copy) persists until you copy something else or restart your phone.
How many items can the Android clipboard hold?
The Android system clipboard holds only one item at a time — the last thing you copied. Keyboard apps like Gboard and Samsung Keyboard add their own clipboard history feature on top of this, which can store 20-30+ recent items.
Will restarting my phone clear the clipboard?
Restarting clears the system clipboard (the single most recent item). However, Gboard and Samsung Keyboard’s clipboard history is stored separately and may persist through restarts. To fully clear everything, use the clipboard manager in your keyboard app.
