How To Factory Reset MacBook Air & MacBook Pro: Erase and Reinstall macOS (2026)

By the DevX testing team. We tested every factory reset method in this guide on MacBook Air M3, MacBook Pro M4 Pro, MacBook Air M1, and a 2019 MacBook Pro (Intel) running macOS Sequoia and macOS Sonoma. We verified the Erase All Content and Settings feature (Apple Silicon), Recovery Mode reinstall (Intel and Apple Silicon), DFU restore, and Time Machine backup and restore. All steps confirmed working as of March 2026.

A factory reset wipes your MacBook completely and reinstalls a clean copy of macOS. You’ll want to do this before selling or giving away your Mac, when fixing persistent software problems, or when you just want a fresh start. The process differs depending on whether you have an Apple Silicon Mac (M1, M2, M3, M4 chips) or an older Intel Mac.

Before You Reset: Back Up Your Mac

A factory reset erases everything on your Mac. Back up your data first.

Time Machine Backup (Recommended)

  1. Connect an external hard drive or SSD to your Mac
  2. Go to System SettingsGeneralTime Machine
  3. Click Add Backup Disk and select your external drive
  4. Click Back Up Now and wait for it to complete

iCloud Backup

Make sure your important files are synced to iCloud: System Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Drive → turn on Desktop & Documents Folders. Also verify Photos, Contacts, Calendars, and Notes are syncing.

Manual Backup

Copy important files to an external drive, USB stick, or cloud storage (Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive). Don’t forget to check Downloads, Desktop, Documents, and any project folders.

Method 1: Erase All Content and Settings (Apple Silicon Macs — Easiest)

If your MacBook has an Apple Silicon chip (M1, M2, M3, M4, or any variant), this is the fastest and simplest method:

  1. Click the Apple menu (top left) → System Settings
  2. Click General in the sidebar
  3. Click Transfer or Reset
  4. Click Erase All Content and Settings
  5. Enter your admin password
  6. The Erase Assistant will show you everything that will be removed — review and click Continue
  7. Enter your Apple Account password to sign out of iCloud and disable Find My Mac
  8. Click Erase All Content & Settings to confirm
  9. Your Mac will restart and erase itself. This takes 5-10 minutes.

When complete, your Mac will show the setup assistant as if it were brand new. If you’re selling or giving it away, simply turn it off at this point.

Which Macs support this method? Any Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or later) or an Intel Mac with a T2 security chip (MacBook Air 2018-2020, MacBook Pro 2018-2020, Mac mini 2018, iMac 2020, iMac Pro, Mac Pro 2019).

Method 2: Recovery Mode Reset (All Macs)

Use this method for older Intel Macs without a T2 chip, or if your Mac isn’t booting normally.

Step 1: Enter macOS Recovery

Apple Silicon Macs (M1-M4):

  1. Shut down your Mac completely
  2. Press and hold the power button until you see “Loading startup options”
  3. Click Options, then click Continue

Intel Macs:

  1. Restart your Mac
  2. Immediately press and hold Command (⌘) + R as it restarts
  3. Keep holding until you see the Apple logo or a spinning globe
  4. Release when you see the macOS Utilities window

Step 2: Erase the Drive

  1. In the macOS Utilities window, select Disk Utility and click Continue
  2. In Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD (or your main drive) in the sidebar — make sure you select the top-level volume, not a sub-volume
  3. Click Erase in the toolbar
  4. Name: Macintosh HD
  5. Format: APFS (for macOS High Sierra or later) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for older systems
  6. Click Erase and wait for it to complete
  7. If you see a “Macintosh HD – Data” volume, erase that first, then erase Macintosh HD
  8. Close Disk Utility when done

Step 3: Reinstall macOS

  1. Back in the macOS Utilities window, select Reinstall macOS
  2. Click Continue and follow the on-screen instructions
  3. Select Macintosh HD as the installation destination
  4. Wait for macOS to download and install (this requires an internet connection and can take 30-60 minutes)

When the installation completes, your Mac will restart to the setup assistant.

Preparing Your Mac for Sale or Trade-In

Follow these steps in order before erasing:

  1. Back up your data (Time Machine, iCloud, or manual)
  2. Sign out of iCloud: System Settings → your name → Sign Out
  3. Sign out of iMessage: Open Messages → Settings → iMessage → Sign Out
  4. Unpair Bluetooth devices: System Settings → Bluetooth → hover over each device and click “X” to remove
  5. Deauthorize your Mac in Apple Music/iTunes: Open Music → Account → Authorizations → Deauthorize This Computer
  6. Erase your Mac using Method 1 or Method 2 above
  7. Remove from your Apple Account: Go to appleid.apple.com, sign in, go to Devices, and remove the Mac

After the Reset: Restore Your Data

If you’re keeping the Mac, you can restore your data during setup:

  • From Time Machine: During setup, choose “From a Mac, Time Machine Backup, or Startup Disk” and select your backup
  • From another Mac: Use Migration Assistant during setup to transfer from another Mac nearby
  • From iCloud: Sign into your Apple Account during setup and your iCloud data will sync automatically
  • Fresh start: Skip the transfer and set up as a new Mac, then manually reinstall apps and copy files from your backup

Frequently Asked Questions

Will factory resetting my MacBook make it faster?

Yes, if slowness is caused by software issues, accumulated junk files, or problematic apps. A clean install gives you a fresh system. However, if your Mac is slow due to insufficient RAM or a failing drive, a reset won’t help with the hardware limitation.

How do I know if my Mac has Apple Silicon or Intel?

Click the Apple menu → About This Mac. Under “Chip” you’ll see M1, M2, M3, M4, etc. for Apple Silicon. Intel Macs show “Processor” with an Intel chip name like “Intel Core i5” or “Intel Core i7”.

Can I factory reset without an internet connection?

The “Erase All Content and Settings” method (Method 1) works without internet if macOS is already installed. Recovery Mode (Method 2) requires internet to download macOS unless you have a bootable installer USB drive.

What macOS version will be installed after the reset?

Method 1 keeps the same macOS version. Recovery Mode with Command+R reinstalls the current version. Command+Option+R installs the latest compatible version. Command+Shift+Option+R installs the version that came with your Mac.

How long does a factory reset take?

Method 1 (Erase All Content and Settings): 5-15 minutes. Method 2 (Recovery Mode): 30-90 minutes depending on internet speed for the macOS download and installation.
