Blue Origin launches seventh crewed mission successfully

Blue Mission

Blue Origin, the aerospace company founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos, has successfully launched its seventh crewed mission to space. The New Shepard rocket blasted off on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, carrying six passengers on a suborbital flight. Among the crew was former Air Force Captain Ed Dwight, who was selected by President Kennedy in 1961 as the nation’s first black astronaut candidate. However, Dwight never had the opportunity to fly into space until now, over 60 years later. In a statement, Dwight expressed his gratitude and excitement: “I’ve waited a long time for this moment, and I’m thrilled to finally have the chance to experience spaceflight.”

This mission marks a significant milestone for Blue Origin as the company continues to advance its space tourism objectives. It is also the first crewed flight for the company since 2022.

Blue Origin’s milestone crewed flight

The six crew members experienced a short period of weightlessness and stunning views of Earth before safely returning to the ground. Blue Origin CEO Bob Smith commented on the successful launch, stating, “Today’s flight demonstrates our commitment to making space travel more accessible and routine for private individuals. We are proud to have played a role in fulfilling Captain Dwight’s lifelong dream of reaching space.”

The New Shepard rocket landed successfully, but the crew encountered a minor issue during egress. A piece of West Texas shrubbery had aligned with the capsule’s hatch, making it difficult for the ground crew to place the stairway for the astronauts to exit. The Blue Origin team, dressed in their signature black and blue outfits, had to stamp down the brush to stabilize the stairway on the uneven terrain. Despite the small hiccup, the crew safely exited the capsule, all smiles and visibly excited about their extraordinary experience. The successful launch and landing of the New Shepard highlight the ongoing advancements in commercial space exploration and Blue Origin’s role in pushing the boundaries of what is possible in this new era of space travel.
