Testing Compatibility Between SQL Server Versions

When migrating SQL code (stored procedures, triggers, etc.) to newer versions, it’s not uncommon to have to rewrite your entire back-end code. However, a simpler solution is to check the exisiting code’s compatibility with the newer versions.

To do this, use the following SQL command:

Syntax : sp_dbcmptlevel [databasename], NewLevel

For instance, you would run the following code to test to test the SQL snippet in 6.5:

sp_dbcmptlevel testdb, 65

And you’d run this code to test it in SQL Server 2000:

sp_dbcmptlevel testdb, 80
