Google Announces Cloud Dataproc Service for Managing Big Data Clusters

The service could make cloud-based big data processing more affordable.

Google has launched a beta trial of a new service designed to help organizations better manage Spark and Hadoop clusters running in its cloud computing environment. Called Cloud Dataproc, the service aims to speed the creation of new clusters and to help customers save money by making it easier to turn clusters on and off as they are needed. Specifically, Google says that it takes five to thirty minutes to start or shut down clusters on competing cloud computing platforms or on-premise infrastructure, but only 90 seconds with Cloud Dataproc.

Cloud Dataproc integrates with Google's other big data and cloud computing services, including BigQuery.
