Elon Musk’s xAI has taken a major leap forward in artificial intelligence by launching the Colossus supercomputer. This powerful AI training system, equipped with 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, was brought online in just 122 days. Musk announced on Twitter, “Colossus is the most powerful AI training system in the world.

Moreover, it will double in size to 200K (50K H200s) in a few months.”

The development and assembly of Colossus were carried out by Dell, leveraging their expertise in deploying AI servers. This achievement follows recent AI advancements by Musk’s companies, including Tesla’s Cortex AI cluster with 50,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs and X’s Memphis Supercluster with 100,000 liquid-cooled H100 GPUs. These supercomputers are actively training AI models, but challenges remain.

Debugging and optimizing settings for these clusters takes time, and securing sufficient power is crucial. The Memphis supercomputer alone consumes around 150 MW, equivalent to the power needed for 100,000 H100 GPUs.

Musk’s new AI training system

The xAI initiative aims to train large language models like Grok version 2, which required up to 20,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. Future versions, such as Grok 3, are expected to demand even more resources, potentially around 100,000 Nvidia H100 processors. To support these ambitious projects, xAI requires vast data centers for both training and running inference on these models.

Musk’s ventures continue to push the boundaries of AI development, promising groundbreaking advancements in the industry. However, concerns have been raised about the environmental impact and resource strain caused by these supercomputers. The Colossus facility in Memphis is estimated to require up to 1 million gallons of water per day for cooling, and the city’s infrastructure will need improvements to support the project.
