Google has unveiled a groundbreaking AI-powered video game engine called GameNGen. It can recreate iconic games like the 1993 classic DOOM. GameNGen uses a neural model that generates gameplay based on various prompts.

The AI learns the intricacies of the game, such as maneuvering through levels, dodging bullets, and defeating demons while interacting with complex environments. Once the AI understands the gameplay, it uses a diffusion model to generate each game frame in real-time, producing a playable version of DOOM. The current version of GameNGen can only recreate games at around 20 frames per second (fps).

This is far from the 120 fps offered by modern gaming standards.

However, the technological feat still represents a significant advancement.

The principle behind GameNGen’s capability suggests a future where AI could reimagine many beloved games. Current limitations might result in performance issues like frame drops and motion sickness. A recent demonstration called MarioVGG shows the AI’s potential in recreating other classic games.

This marks only the beginning of AI’s role in video game development. It hints at an exciting and possibly unsettling future. As the technology evolves, developers and gamers alike are watching closely.

They want to see how AI will redefine the landscape of video gaming.
