Disruptions to roads, services in South Slave

Residents in the South Slave region should prepare for disruptions to roads, phone calls, and internet access in the coming days. The NWT government announced road closures and delays due to the transportation of modular homes. These homes will be moved along Highway 5 and across the Big Buffalo River Bridge until Monday, causing disruptions from 8am to 6pm daily.

Next week, one modular home will head to Fort Smith on Monday and Tuesday, while four others will be transported to Fort Resolution from Tuesday to Saturday on Highway 6. Drivers should check the new highway conditions website before traveling. Northwestel is also planning maintenance work that will impact voice, internet, and cellular services in Kakisa, Enterprise, Fort Resolution, Fort Smith, and Hay River.

Service impacts in South Slave

This work is scheduled overnight between 12am and 6am from Tuesday to Friday next week, October 22-25. Technicians will replace temporary fibre lines installed after last year’s wildfires with permanent ones.

The GNWT stated, “While this work is essential for long-term service reliability, it will temporarily disrupt network access – including 9-1-1 services – for up to two hours each night. If your phone remains operational, you should still be able to reach 9-1-1. If it is not, you can contact the local RCMP detachment directly or go to the nearest RCMP station.

For health emergencies, if you are unable to reach local health clinics or hospitals by phone, please proceed directly to the nearest health facility. For non-emergencies, you can call 8-1-1 to speak with a registered nurse.”
