Haunting growth of ghost forests in North Carolina

NASA satellite images have revealed the haunting growth of “ghost forests” along the coast of North Carolina. These eerie landscapes occur when saltwater floods coastal forests, killing the trees and leaving behind tracts of dead timber. The images, captured by NASA’s Landsat satellites in 2005 and 2024, show the spread of ghost forests in the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge.

According to the NASA Earth Observatory, approximately 11% of the land in this refuge transformed into ghost forest between 1985 and 2019. The expansion of ghost forests is exacerbated by sea-level rise, with North Carolina experiencing about 0.15 inches (3 to 4 millimeters) of annual sea level rise, three times faster than the global average.

Emily Bernhardt, an ecologist at Duke University, explains, “Marshes shift locations over time as sea levels rise, but there’s nowhere for cypress forests to go. They’re already hemmed in by farmland or other development, so these iconic wetlands are getting squeezed and dying off in mass mortality events instead.”

A significant portion of the ghost forest’s growth followed a large die-off in 2011, triggered by a drought and Hurricane Irene, which forced salty water inland. Ghost forests continue to spread across the East Coast, reaching as far north as Massachusetts and as far south as the Carolinas.

The satellite images show the advance of the ghost forest appearing like the spread of rot on an avocado, with browning portions replacing once verdant areas. The troubling trend suggests that recent heavy rains in the southeastern United States could further endanger coastal forests, serving as a haunting reminder of the impact of climate change and human activity on our natural landscapes. For now, the ghostly expansion continues, leaving an unsettling forewarning about the future of coastal ecosystems.
