Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, X.AI Corp., called xAI (for the rest of us), is set to invest significantly in its Memphis supercomputer facility.
So a tenfold increase in energy demand? And in resource and water use?

The company plans to expand the supercomputer, known as Colossus, to house up to one million high-tech Nvidia semiconductors over the next two years. Brent Mayo, xAI’s top executive in Memphis, made the announcement at the Greater Memphis Chamber’s annual luncheon on Wednesday.
He revealed that the expansion will not involve pursuing tax incentives for the additional investment. The presence of xAI in Memphis has also attracted the attention of other major tech companies.

According to Mayo and Ted Townsend, CEO of the Greater Memphis Chamber, Nvidia, Super Micro Computer, and Dell are considering establishing manufacturing facilities in the city.
Townsend noted that executives from these tech giants have frequently visited Memphis to explore potential new manufacturing spaces.

However, these companies will not develop on the 552 acres that xAI recently leased near its facility on Paul R Lowry Road.

The expansion of Colossus has already begun. The supercomputer has doubled in size and now uses 200,000 Nvidia H100 processing chips, making it the largest supercomputer of its kind in the world.
Mayo highlighted the practical applications of Colossus, such as its ability to calculate cancer research studies that would typically take over 12 years within just 4.5 seconds. The xAI facility, located at the former Electrolux site, has an arrangement with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to use more than 100 megawatts of power, with the potential to use over 150 megawatts at its peak. The expansion will require additional Tesla megapacks to allow the facility to run independently of the Memphis Light, Gas, and Water (MGLW) grid, reducing strain on the electrical grid for residents.
The TVA, xAI, and Nucor Steel are also collaborating on a proposed wastewater treatment plant named the “Colossus Water Recycle Facility.” The plant is expected to average 7 million gallons of water daily, with a peak flow of 10.4 million gallons. MLGW President and CEO Doug McGowen stated that a new substation should be completed by 2025 to meet the facility’s peak electric demand. The expansion of xAI’s Memphis supercomputer and the potential arrival of other major tech companies in the city signals a significant step forward for Memphis to become a hub for advanced technology and computing power.
