Qualcomm has refuted claims made by Intel co-CEO Michelle Johnston Holthaus that Arm PCs with Snapdragon processors have high return rates. In a formal statement, a Qualcomm representative stated that their devices continue to receive positive consumer reviews and industry accolades, with return rates being within industry norms. Holthaus had previously asserted that retailers face high return rates with Arm PCs due to setup issues and other functionality concerns.
She claimed that retailers’ number one concern is the large percentage of returns they receive for these devices. However, Qualcomm’s launch of its Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X Plus processors this year has strengthened the position of Arm PCs, making them more competitive with Intel-powered systems. Improvements in Windows 11 and enhanced emulation for running apps have also contributed to Arm PCs becoming more appealing to consumers.
Despite these advancements, Holthaus acknowledged the progress made but emphasized that there are still significant challenges for Arm computing to become ubiquitous in the PC market.
Qualcomm dismisses Intel’s return claims
Without official word from retailers, it is difficult to determine the accuracy of the return rate claims.
It is unlikely that retailers will disclose such sensitive data regarding their major clients, but further details may emerge in the future. The dispute between Qualcomm and Intel comes amidst leadership changes at Intel, with Holthaus and David Zinsner serving as interim co-CEOs following the abrupt retirement of Pat Gelsinger on December 2, 2024. Holthaus has also been named the permanent CEO of Intel Products.
Intel remains strong in several areas but faces challenges within its Intel Foundry Services. The future success of this division is crucial to the company’s strategy, and much work remains to resolve the ongoing issues. As the battle between Qualcomm and Intel continues, the PC market is set to witness increased competition in the coming years.
Qualcomm expects 30 to 50 percent of laptops to transition to non-x86 platforms over the next five years, underscoring their confidence in the future of Arm-based architecture in the PC market.
