Google and Samsung reveal Android XR

Google has unveiled Android XR, a new operating system for headsets and glasses created in partnership with Samsung and Qualcomm. The platform aims to bring the power of Android to XR devices, enabling users to explore, connect, and create in new ways. Android XR will support a diverse range of devices, with key partners like Qualcomm, Lynx, Sony, and XREAL developing various products for personal and business use.

Google continues to collaborate with Magic Leap on XR technology, exploring future products that blend AR and AI.

The first device to launch with Android XR will be Project Moohan, a headset built by Samsung that allows users to switch between immersive virtual environments and the real world. The headset will feature Gemini, an AI assistant that enables users to have conversations about what they’re seeing or control the device with natural intent.

Google is also reimagining some of its popular apps for headsets, including YouTube, Google TV, Google Photos, Google Maps, and Chrome.

Google unveils Android XR integration

Users will be able to watch content on virtual big screens, relive memories in 3D, explore with Immersive View, multitask with multiple virtual screens, and perform quick searches with Circle to Search.

Beyond headsets, Android XR will support glasses that provide all-day assistance.

These stylish and comfortable glasses will seamlessly integrate with other Android devices, offering features like directions, translations, message summaries, and more, accessible in the user’s line of sight or directly in their ear. Android XR is designed as an open, unified platform for headsets and glasses, offering users a choice of devices and access to familiar apps.

For developers, it provides a unified platform to create experiences for a broad range of devices using familiar Android tools and frameworks. Google invites developers, device makers, and creators to join in shaping the future of this next evolution of computing. Stay tuned for updates on device availability next year.
