Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, two tech billionaires, are leading an initiative called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to identify areas for budget cuts in the U.S. government. The group, which is not an official government agency, plans to send representatives to various federal departments to recommend ways to reduce spending. Musk initially set a goal of cutting $2 trillion from the federal budget but has since revised his estimate, calling it a “best-case outcome.” He now believes that if they aim for $2 trillion, they have a good chance of achieving $1 trillion in cuts.

Despite Musk’s influence and close ties to former President Donald Trump, his ability to affect spending has been limited, as evidenced by Congress amending a short-term spending bill he had criticized. Ramaswamy and Musk have already sent emissaries to more than a dozen federal agencies, including the Treasury Department, the Internal Revenue Service, and the Departments of Homeland Security, Veterans Affairs, and Health and Human Services.

Government efficiency plan faces resistance

However, their efforts have been met with suspicion and resistance from career government workers who believe the businessmen are underestimating the complexities of reducing public spending and regulatory red tape. Musk has been actively recruiting staff for DOGE, contributing about $275 million to Trump’s election campaign and advertising for “super high-IQ small-government revolutionaries willing to work 80+ hours per week” on his social media platform, X. The crowd-sourced recruitment drive has attracted numerous applicants, with many sending their IQ details through direct messaging.

DOGE has also made more structured efforts to fill specific roles, particularly after Christmas, when it began seeking full-time staff for salaried positions in information technology, human resources, and finance. Steve Davis, the president of Musk’s Boring Company, has been brought in as a key leadership figure, while other recruits have been hired to focus on specific areas such as legislation and regulation.
