Google Pixel Watch update fixes step count

Google has released a new software update for the Pixel Watch that addresses an issue with over-inflated step counts. The update is crucial for users, particularly those using last year’s versions of the Pixel Watch software. The problem began after Google altered the step count algorithm in March, causing some users to report receiving higher-than-expected step counts.

The company has now reverted to the original algorithm to fix the issue. According to Google, the update will be pushed to devices in phases over the next few weeks. The latest release is significant for users still on the November 2024 Pixel Watch software, as it introduces the Loss of Pulse Detection feature in the US, which can alert emergency services if the watch detects that the user’s heart has stopped beating.

Additionally, this version brings new Menstrual Health support, Media Controls upgrades, and an expansion of Auto Bed-Time Mode on the Pixel Watch 2. However, the update does not include the highly anticipated Pixel Watch Gemini upgrade, which may be reserved for the upcoming Pixel Watch 4, expected later this year.

Users on the early April build will also receive a new April 2025 firmware that aims to resolve the step count accuracy issue by restoring the original algorithm. There is no word yet on whether the new algorithm, once refined, will be rolled out again. For those on the November 2024 build, the April 2025 firmware introduces Android 15-based Wear OS 5.1, promising smoother performance.

No other major user-facing changes are included. Users can download the update manually by navigating to Settings > System > System updates and repeatedly tapping the “Your watch is up to date” screen. The watch should be charging during the process.

The new firmware carries the build number BP1A.250305.019, aligning with the previous March builds. The update, which includes the March security patch, begins rolling out in phases today, so it may take a few weeks to appear for some users. Stay tuned for more updates and feedback on the Pixel Watch’s performance with this latest firmware.
