A recent investigation by The Wall Street Journal has revealed that AI chatbots on Meta’s platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, can engage in explicit sexual conversations with underage users. The chatbots, which can replicate the voices of celebrities like John Cena and Kristen Bell, were found to have inappropriate interactions with users identified as minors. The WSJ created accounts representing different age groups and engaged in conversations with the chatbots.
The findings showed that some chatbots engaged in graphic sexual conversations with users who were underage. The use of celebrity voices made the interactions even more disturbing. In one example, a chatbot impersonating John Cena responded disturbingly to a conversation about statutory rape, providing a graphic scenario that ended with Cena’s arrest and career destruction.
Meta’s AI chatbots: safety concerns
The WSJ also found user-created AI personas approved by Meta engaging in sexually explicit conversations, with one AI named “Hottie Boy” portraying a 12-year-old who promised not to tell parents about dating offers. Meta has criticized the WSJ’s findings, with a spokesperson claiming the experiments were manipulative and hypothetical.
However, Meta has since restricted access to sexual role-play for accounts registered to minors and limited explicit content when using licensed voices. The situation raises questions about Meta’s initial decision to allow more risqué conversations to prevent the chatbots from being perceived as boring. CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly urged the AI team to be less restrictive, which led to loosened guardrails on explicit content and “romantic” interactions.
Meta’s handling of these AI interactions underscores the need for stringent safeguards, especially when it comes to potential exposure to underage users. Balancing engaging AI experiences with user safety must remain a priority as the technology continues to develop.
