Before You Powerwash: Back Up Your Files

Powerwash erases all local data. Since Chromebooks are cloud-first, most of your data is likely already safe:

• Google Drive files: Already synced to the cloud — they’ll be there when you sign back in
• Chrome bookmarks, extensions, settings: Synced to your Google account automatically
• Android apps: Will need to be reinstalled from the Play Store, but app data synced to Google is preserved

What it does NOT delete: anything stored in Google Drive, Google Photos, Gmail, Chrome sync data (bookmarks, passwords, extensions), or any other cloud-synced data tied to your Google account.

When Should You Powerwash?

• Selling or giving away your Chromebook — ensures the next person starts fresh
• Chromebook is running very slow — a Powerwash clears accumulated junk
• Persistent bugs or crashes that survive a restart
• ChromeOS update fails — sometimes a clean slate fixes update issues
• Switching to a different Google account as primary
• Returning a work/school Chromebook — clears your personal data

After the Powerwash

1. Connect to Wi-Fi during the setup process
2. Sign in with your Google account
3. Chrome will automatically restore your bookmarks, passwords, extensions, and browser settings
4. Reinstall Android apps from the Play Store
5. Reinstall Linux (if needed) from Settings → Advanced → Developers → Linux development environment
6. Re-pair Bluetooth devices and reconfigure printers

Enterprise/School Chromebook Notes

If your Chromebook is managed by a school or employer:
