How To Powerwash a Chromebook: Factory Reset & Data Wipe (2026)

By the DevX testing team. We tested every Chromebook reset method in this guide on an HP Chromebook Plus x360, Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 5, ASUS Chromebook Flip, and Acer Chromebook 516 GE running ChromeOS 131. We verified Powerwash from Settings, keyboard shortcut Powerwash, Recovery Mode reset, and enterprise-managed device handling. All steps confirmed working as of March 2026.

Powerwash is ChromeOS’s built-in factory reset feature. It erases everything on your Chromebook — local files, accounts, settings, and downloaded apps — and restores it to out-of-box condition. It’s the go-to fix for slow performance, persistent glitches, or preparing your Chromebook for sale.

Before You Powerwash: Back Up Your Files

Powerwash erases all local data. Since Chromebooks are cloud-first, most of your data is likely already safe:

  • Google Drive files: Already synced to the cloud — they’ll be there when you sign back in
  • Chrome bookmarks, extensions, settings: Synced to your Google account automatically
  • Android apps: Will need to be reinstalled from the Play Store, but app data synced to Google is preserved
  • Local files in Downloads folder: These are NOT backed up — manually copy them to Google Drive or a USB drive before Powerwashing
  • Linux apps and files (Crostini): NOT backed up — export your Linux container first if you use it

Method 1: Powerwash From Settings (Standard Method)

  1. Click the time/status area in the bottom-right corner
  2. Click the gear icon to open Settings
  3. In the left sidebar, click System preferences
  4. Click Powerwash
  5. Click Reset
  6. In the confirmation dialog, click Restart
  7. Your Chromebook will restart and begin the Powerwash process
  8. After it restarts, click Powerwash on the confirmation screen
  9. Click Continue

The Powerwash takes 1-2 minutes. Your Chromebook will restart to the initial setup screen, ready for a fresh start or a new user.

Method 2: Keyboard Shortcut Powerwash

If you can’t access Settings (e.g., you’re stuck on the login screen):

  1. On the login screen, press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R
  2. Click Restart in the dialog that appears
  3. After restart, click Powerwash
  4. Click Continue to confirm

This method works even if you can’t sign into the Chromebook.

Method 3: Recovery Mode (For Severely Broken Chromebooks)

If your Chromebook won’t boot at all, use Recovery Mode to reinstall ChromeOS entirely:

Step 1: Create a Recovery USB

  1. On another computer, install the Chromebook Recovery Utility Chrome extension
  2. Insert a USB drive (8 GB or larger) or SD card
  3. Follow the instructions to create a recovery drive for your specific Chromebook model

Step 2: Boot Into Recovery

  1. Turn off your Chromebook
  2. Press and hold Esc + Refresh (↻), then press the Power button
  3. Release the keys when you see the recovery screen
  4. Insert the recovery USB drive
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall ChromeOS

This is a complete OS reinstall — more thorough than a Powerwash, and necessary when ChromeOS itself is corrupted.

What Does Powerwash Delete?

  • All local files in the Downloads folder and any other local storage
  • All user accounts and their data on the Chromebook
  • Downloaded Android apps from the Play Store
  • Linux apps and containers (Crostini)
  • Saved Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth pairings
  • Printer configurations
  • All Chromebook settings and customizations

What it does NOT delete: anything stored in Google Drive, Google Photos, Gmail, Chrome sync data (bookmarks, passwords, extensions), or any other cloud-synced data tied to your Google account.

When Should You Powerwash?

  • Selling or giving away your Chromebook — ensures the next person starts fresh
  • Chromebook is running very slow — a Powerwash clears accumulated junk
  • Persistent bugs or crashes that survive a restart
  • ChromeOS update fails — sometimes a clean slate fixes update issues
  • Switching to a different Google account as primary
  • Returning a work/school Chromebook — clears your personal data

After the Powerwash

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi during the setup process
  2. Sign in with your Google account
  3. Chrome will automatically restore your bookmarks, passwords, extensions, and browser settings
  4. Reinstall Android apps from the Play Store
  5. Reinstall Linux (if needed) from Settings → Advanced → Developers → Linux development environment
  6. Re-pair Bluetooth devices and reconfigure printers

Enterprise/School Chromebook Notes

If your Chromebook is managed by a school or employer:

  • You may not have permission to Powerwash — the option might be disabled by your administrator
  • A Powerwash does NOT remove the enterprise enrollment — the Chromebook will re-enroll to the organization after reset
  • Contact your IT administrator if you need to fully de-provision the device

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Powerwash remove my Google account?

It removes your account from the Chromebook, but your Google account itself is unaffected. All your cloud data (Drive, Photos, Gmail) remains safe. You just need to sign back in after the Powerwash.

How long does a Powerwash take?

Usually 1-2 minutes. The Chromebook restarts, erases local data, and boots to the setup screen. It’s much faster than resetting Windows or macOS devices.

Can I undo a Powerwash?

No. Local files deleted by Powerwash are gone permanently. However, since most Chromebook data lives in the cloud, signing back into your Google account restores the majority of your data and settings.

Is Powerwash the same as factory reset?

Yes. “Powerwash” is Google’s term for factory reset on ChromeOS. It does the same thing — erases all local data and restores the device to its original state.
