How To Connect AirPods to a Laptop
AirPods work with any Bluetooth-enabled laptop, not just MacBooks. Whether you have a Windows laptop from Dell, HP, Lenovo, or ASUS, or a MacBook, connecting AirPods takes under a minute. Here’s how to pair your AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max with any laptop in 2026.
How To Connect AirPods to a Windows Laptop
Step-by-Step:
- Open Settings on your Windows laptop (Windows key + I)
- Click "Bluetooth & devices" (Windows 11) or "Devices → Bluetooth" (Windows 10)
- Make sure Bluetooth is turned on
- Put your AirPods in pairing mode:
- Place both AirPods in the charging case
- Open the lid
- Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until the status light flashes white
- On your laptop, click "Add device" → "Bluetooth"
- Wait for "AirPods" to appear in the device list
- Click "AirPods" to connect
- Click "Done" once paired
Your AirPods will now appear as a connected audio device. They should automatically reconnect to your laptop each time you open the case nearby.
Set AirPods as Default Audio Output:
- Click the speaker icon in the taskbar (bottom right)
- Click the arrow (>) next to the volume slider
- Select "AirPods" from the output list
Or: Right-click the speaker icon → "Sound settings" → under "Output," select AirPods.
How To Connect AirPods to a MacBook
Connecting AirPods to a Mac is even simpler if you’re signed into the same Apple ID:
If AirPods Are Already Paired With Your iPhone:
- Your AirPods should automatically appear on your Mac if both are signed into the same Apple ID with iCloud
- Click the Control Center icon in the menu bar (or the speaker icon)
- Click the audio output section
- Select your AirPods from the list
If Pairing for the First Time:
- Go to System Settings → Bluetooth
- Put AirPods in the case, open the lid, and hold the setup button until the light flashes white
- Click "Connect" next to your AirPods in the Bluetooth list
- Done — they’ll auto-connect going forward
How To Connect AirPods to a Chromebook
- Click the clock/status area in the bottom right
- Click the Bluetooth icon
- Make sure Bluetooth is on
- Put AirPods in pairing mode (hold setup button, white flashing light)
- Click your AirPods when they appear
- They connect immediately
How To Connect AirPods Pro to a Laptop
The process is identical for AirPods Pro and AirPods Pro 2:
- Place AirPods Pro in the case
- Open the lid
- Press and hold the setup button on the back until the light flashes white
- Follow the same steps above for your laptop type (Windows, Mac, or Chromebook)
AirPods Pro 2 with the USB-C case have the same pairing process. The setup button is on the front bottom of the case (the section near the USB-C port for newer models).
How To Connect AirPods Max to a Laptop
- Press and hold the noise control button on the right ear cup for about 5 seconds
- The status light on the bottom of the right ear cup flashes white
- On your laptop, go to Bluetooth settings and select "AirPods Max"
Troubleshooting: AirPods Won’t Connect to Laptop
AirPods Not Showing Up:
- Make sure the AirPods are in pairing mode (white flashing light, not amber)
- Move the AirPods closer to the laptop (within 3 feet)
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on on the laptop
- Make sure AirPods are charged — place them in the case for at least 5 minutes
AirPods Connected But No Sound:
- Check the audio output is set to AirPods (not laptop speakers)
- Windows: Right-click speaker icon → Sound settings → make sure AirPods is selected under Output
- Mac: System Settings → Sound → Output → select AirPods
- Try removing the AirPods from your ears and putting them back in
AirPods Keep Disconnecting:
- Update your laptop’s Bluetooth driver (Windows: Device Manager → Bluetooth → right-click → Update driver)
- Disable Bluetooth on other nearby devices (iPhone, iPad) that may be pulling the AirPods connection
- On iPhone: Settings → Bluetooth → tap (i) next to AirPods → "Connect to This iPhone" → set to "When Last Connected to This iPhone" (prevents iPhone from stealing the connection)
- Reset AirPods: Hold the setup button on the case for 15 seconds until the light flashes amber, then white. Re-pair from scratch.
Audio Quality Issues on Windows:
- Windows sometimes connects AirPods in "Hands-Free" mode (lower quality for microphone use)
- To fix: Right-click speaker icon → Sound settings → scroll to "Advanced" → disable "AirPods Hands-Free AG Audio" if you don’t need the microphone
Tested with AirPods (3rd gen), AirPods Pro 2 (USB-C), and AirPods Max on Windows 11 24H2 (Dell XPS 15, HP Spectre x360, Lenovo ThinkPad X1), macOS Sequoia 15.3 (MacBook Air M3, MacBook Pro M3 Pro), and ChromeOS. Last updated March 2026 by the DevX editorial team.
