Michael Condrey, the head of 31st Union, has been fired by 2K Games. This comes after the weak reveal of the studio’s new game, Project Ethos. Sources say Condrey was let go on February 3, 2025.
He founded 31st Union after working at EA and co-founding Sledgehammer Games, which is known for Call of Duty: WWII. Since its reveal last year, Project Ethos, 31st Union’s debut title, has attracted little interest. A 2K representative said, “We are grateful to Michael for the dedication, passion, and work ethic it took to build an incredible team and shape the vision of 31st Union.”
The representative added that Condrey will stay on as an advisor for the game.
They also said 2K is “very committed to the forward path for Ethos and the studio’s people and culture.
No new studio head has been announced for 31st Union, and the future of Project Ethos is also uncertain. Take-Two’s upcoming quarterly results may provide more details.
Project Ethos is a colorful extraction shooter with hero-shooter elements.
Michael Condrey exits 31st Union
It was revealed last fall but received a muted reaction.
Under Condrey’s leadership, the game had a rocky development cycle. The announcement and beta tests for Project Ethos happened soon after Sony’s expensive sci-fi hero shooter collapsed. The game was unreleased and refunded less than two weeks after launch.
While some live-service games, like Marvel Rivals, have succeeded, many struggle in the competitive market. Project Ethos’s poor reception seems to have led to Condrey’s removal. However, work on the game will continue with Condrey as an advisor.
Take-Two Interactive, 2K’s parent company, recently announced major changes. These include selling some subsidiaries and focusing more on big releases, which could have contributed to the decision to fire Condrey.
Tomorrow’s quarterly financial results from Take-Two may provide more information on Condrey’s exit and what will happen with Project Ethos.
