Rachel Zegler stars in the upcoming horror-comedy film “Y2K” from A24. The movie is set on New Year’s Eve 1999 and follows a group of high school students who must fight off killer machines. In the trailer, everyday devices like hair spray and VCR tapes turn deadly.
A Tamagotchi even saws through someone’s head. The story plays into the real-life Y2K bug, a computer flaw that caused panic before the year 2000. “Y2K is real,” a character yells in the trailer.
Another warns of a “global computer apocalypse.”
The film is directed by “Saturday Night Live” alum Kyle Mooney. He co-wrote the script with Evan Winter. Producers include Jonah Hill and Cooper Wehde.
Zegler is joined by a star-studded cast.
A24’s bold move
It includes Jaeden Martell, Julian Dennison, The Kid Laroi, and Alicia Silverstone.
“Y2K” premiered at South by Southwest in March. It is set to hit theaters on December 6. Zegler’s other upcoming projects include a Netflix animated movie and a Disney live-action film.
She recently starred in “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.”
“Y2K” marks a bold move for A24. The indie distributor has had mixed results with horror-comedies in the past. Films like “Bodies Bodies Bodies” were critical hits.
But others, such as “Beau Is Afraid” with Joaquin Phoenix, flopped at the box office. The response to the “Y2K” trailer has been divided so far. Some viewers are unsure if the film aims to be scary or funny.
But with its unique premise and notable cast, “Y2K” could offer a fresh take on the genre.
