Pennsylvania State Police advise that anyone receiving notifications about unknown tracking devices should screenshot the alerts, report them to 911, and inform trusted individuals. Dr. Staci Ford, board president of Sojourner House Moms, emphasized the importance of vigilance, stating, “It’s becoming difficult; we have to be five steps ahead all the time.”

Recent tracking incidents involving AirTags in Pittsburgh have raised alarms about the growing trend of using these devices for e-stalking. AirTags are small tracking devices found in various places without knowing the individuals being tracked.

A recent survey by the Women’s Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh confirmed this modern form of e-stalking. Rhonda Fleming from the center noted, “90 percent said, yes, they had experienced being tracked by technology.”

The devices are not only placed in cars but have also been found in more intimate locations.

Pennsylvania addresses AirTag e-stalking

“I had somebody with one in the bottom of their shoe, and they had no idea it was under there,” Ford explained. To tackle this issue, a Pennsylvania bill was passed last year in the state house to classify the use of AirTags for stalking as a third-degree misdemeanor. The state senate judiciary committee is currently considering the bill.

This growing issue underscores the necessity for awareness and legislative action to protect individuals from intrusive and potentially dangerous tracking practices. Authorities urge the public to be vigilant about new tracking technologies and report any suspicious activity immediately.
