AMD has announced that its upcoming Radeon RX 9070 graphics cards will only support UEFI systems. UEFI, or Unified Extensible Firmware Interface, is a modern replacement for PCs’ older BIOS firmware. AMD says the RX 9070 GPUs are designed to work exclusively with UEFI motherboards.
This means they may not function properly on older systems that still use legacy BIOS. For most users with recent PCs, this should not be an issue. Modern systems typically come with UEFI firmware that is already enabled.
AMD’s move to UEFI-only support
UEFI offers several benefits over the old BIOS, such as:
– Faster boot times
– Support for larger hard drives over 2TB
– More secure boot process
– Easier firmware updates
However, gamers with very old PCs that lack UEFI support may have problems using a new RX 9070 card. The GPU may not work at all if the motherboard does not fully support UEFI mode.
To avoid issues, RX 9070 buyers should check that their PC motherboard has UEFI firmware and is set to run in UEFI mode rather than legacy BIOS compatibility mode. If the system does not support UEFI, it may be time to consider a hardware upgrade. AMD’s move to UEFI-only support aims to provide better performance and security for most users on up-to-date systems.
Only a few people with very old PCs that have not been upgraded in many years will likely encounter compatibility problems with the new RX 9070 GPUs.
