Apple faces delays for major Siri upgrade

Apple is facing potential delays in releasing a significant upgrade to its Siri digital assistant as part of the iOS 18.4 update, according to a report by Mark Gurman. The enhanced Siri, designed to be more personal and better understand context, is still in development, with Apple “racing to finish the software.”

Gurman reports that “Apple Inc.’s long-promised overhaul for the Siri digital assistant is facing engineering problems and software bugs, threatening to postpone or limit its release, according to people with knowledge of the matter.”

The result could be that some features scheduled for the April release of iOS 18.4 may be postponed until the iOS 18.5 update, expected in May or later. The more personal Siri aims to integrate user data to improve responses to queries and more precisely control a user’s apps.

One option being considered is to include the features in the April release but have them turned off by default, with Apple enabling them automatically in the iOS 18.5 update.

Siri upgrade faces potential delays

Apple would prefer to delay the release rather than deliver a product that is not functioning properly, especially when it is such a central part of the iOS 18 promise.

However, delaying a feature that was teased in June until 11 months later is not ideal. There are more Apple Intelligence features on the way, including email sorting for iPad and Mac, a new style of picture creation in Image Playground, and more. Some of these are still expected to come in iOS 18.4, even if Siri’s upgrade is delayed.
