Apple’s AirTag has been a popular Bluetooth tracker since its release in 2021. It is used to locate lost items like keys and luggage. Now, there are rumors that Apple may launch an improved AirTag 2 later this year.
The original AirTag uses Bluetooth, ultra-wideband (UWB), and Apple’s Find My network to track items. The new AirTag 2 is expected to be announced at either Apple’s iPad event this spring or the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. Rumors suggest the AirTag 2 could have an expanded tracking range of up to 300 feet, thanks to a new UWB chip.
This is three times the current 100-foot range. The new model may also have better security features to prevent stalking.
Improved range and security features
The original AirTag had issues with people misusing it to track others. Apple addressed this with updates that notify both Apple and Android users when an unknown AirTag is detected moving with them. The AirTag 2 is rumored to have a speaker that is harder to remove, which would provide audible alerts if the AirTag is separated from its owner.
There is also speculation that the AirTag 2 could integrate with the Apple Vision Pro for spatial computing and motion tracking. However, this feature may not be available right away and could come later through a firmware update. Despite a wish list from users, the AirTag 2 is not expected to include certain advanced features that people have been hoping for.
As anticipation grows, tech enthusiasts and Apple fans will be closely watching for any official announcements about the AirTag 2. For now, we can only speculate and hope that the new tracker will bring meaningful improvements while still being reliable like the original AirTag.
