Apple plans to release two new versions of its AirPods earphones later this year. The new AirPods 4 will come in both a lower and higher-priced version. These will sit alongside the AirPods Pro 2, which remain at the top of Apple’s earbuds lineup.
The new AirPods 4 models are expected to offer significant updates. The higher-end version is expected to include Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). This would make ANC available at a lower price point for the first time.
It would no longer be exclusive to AirPods Pro. Both new models will feature a redesigned look. They will include a USB-C port instead of a Lightning port.
They will have shorter stems, an updated fit, and enhanced audio quality. The AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 currently utilize the Lightning port. Apple is gradually phasing this out.
The company usually releases new AirPods alongside new iPhone models. It is rumored that the launch of the iPhone 16 series will take place at an event in September this year.
New AirPods with ANC and USB-C
Apple initially introduced the AirPods 2 in early 2019. They presented them as a relatively affordable entry-level model. The older AirPods 2 have a longer design and stems, along with a taller case.
They are largely devoid of modern features, including water resistance. They also suffer from shorter battery life. The AirPods 3 were released in late 2021.
They feature a design similar to the AirPods Pro. They incorporate higher-end elements like Spatial Audio but lack noise cancellation. Apple has yet to confirm these details publicly.
The company is looking to upgrade all of its AirPods charging cases to USB-C, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. It is also noted that Apple intends to launch a third-generation AirPods Pro “later,” likely meaning next year. There was no mention of the status of new premium over-ear headphones.
It’s been almost four years since Apple introduced its last premium over-ear model. The new AirPods are expected to be announced at Apple’s annual iPhone event, typically held in mid-September. While the company has not confirmed a date, this period has traditionally been when new hardware is unveiled.
